Summer Breakdown: You get it

When the flat is clean, and Jasmine’s stolen one of Frankie’s tops, she catches Frankie looking at the same spot on the couch that she was looking at when Jasmine first made the tea.

Jasmine knows Frankie doesn’t think she deserves anything when she’s like this. As if there’s a time where she doesn’t deserve the world. Jasmine has spent the entire time she’s known Frankie, figuring out how to give it to her. But right now, Frankie doesn’t need the world. She just needs a little.

Jasmine grabs a silly thing she bought the other day and clicks it on. It’s supposed to look like stars on the ceiling but she’s not sure it will. But she doesn’t know anything about Frankie’s landlord apart from the fact they still haven’t fixed the lift, so she wasn’t sure she could stick hundreds of glow in the dark stars on the ceiling.

Still, when she flicks it on, Frankie’s eyes light up. The ceiling turns a deep blue, a galaxy of stars above them. Jasmine plays a song from her phone, and holds her hand out. Frankie might not want to move, but Jasmine will try anything for her. Even looking foolish, dancing alone in her living room.

Frankie screws her nose up, hugging herself on her couch. She looks so young, so small like this. But then, she stands slowly, and joins her. It’s not so much a dance, as it is Frankie leaning against her but it’s the most important dance she’s ever had. After a moment, Frankie sighs, wrapping her arms around her.

“You’re my favourite thing over fourteen,” she whispers.

Jasmine laughs. “I can’t believe you’ve sold me down the river for Marc and Lani.”

“You love it.”

I love you.
